How to reduce stress from our challenging political environment

As a mind-body movement educator, dancer, author, international workshop leader and integrative medicine leader, I know just how strong the connection between our mind, body, energy and feelings is.

The past few weeks have been particularly tense in our communities, due to our President’s divisive comments and behavior.

From failing to reprove white supremacist and neo-nazi thought in the wake of a rally that left at least one dead in Charlottesville, to standing by his comments at an Arizona rally, our President may have you thinking: How far is this going to go?

Regardless of our political affiliation, what’s going on in our country affects all of us. We are witnessing the fire of division, racism, and violence being stoked over and over by our President. Additionally, the seeds for violence are getting out of hand and now, are coming to California.

But, there is good news. We can take control of our minds, bodies and energy to combat stress and bring love back into our bodies.

How the U.S. President’s Behavior is Affecting Your Health and What to do About it

I wrote this Huffington Post article to encourage everyone to take hold of the energy within and be proactive about managing stress.  The constant fight or flight response caused by the political and social environment we are living in can be a major stressor. Luckily, we have the tools within ourselves to overcome our stress.

I’ve outlined the ways in which stress affects our bodies. In the article, I share simple tips you can integrate into your daily routine to decrease your stress.

Remember that fear responses come without an invitation, but we don’t have to allow them to stay. You CAN do something about it, right NOW. Stay vital and aware!

Greetings From Our Journey to Teotihuacan!

Last March 10-12, we held a workshop in Teotihuacan, one of the largest and oldest cities from Mesoamerican culture. We started our journey at the hotel located next to the archeological site, by practicing movement and breathing techniques to renew our bodies and release stress and exhaustion. We refreshed our minds by setting clear intentions for the weekend. We then identified and acknowledged blocks and limiting ideas around the topic of money, questioned them, and updated them. In this way, we created space inside us for renew creative energies to flow and to manifest projects in our daily lives.

Early Saturday morning we walked in silence towards the pyramid of the Sun, the largest of the three pyramids in Teotihuacan, and the third largest pyramid in the World—It is 220×230 meters at the base, and 63 meters in height. This particular pyramid was built around 2,000 years ago, and more than 70,000 pieces of art have been discovered in that pyramid so far. All the time we walked in silence, we repeated our individual intentions to stay focus and open to receive teachings from the city of Teotihuacan.

My mantra filled me with joy and calm:  “I am breathing in and out the divine fresh air of life, residing in radiant health and well being, and releasing and dissolving limiting patterns and interpretations, freeing myself fully for the highest good of all concerned.”

The night before rained and the air felt fresh and pure in our faces as we walked through the avenue of the death. I kept looking at the group participants faces bathed by the sun rays and radiating joy and vitality.

At the bottom of the Pyramid of the Sun and before climbing up, we called on our relationships with our grandfathers, our fathers, and the male lineage from our families to acknowledge and release anything that needed to be healed to clarify the male energy inside us.

One of the participants and Being Energy Teacher, Crisólogo from Michoacan, shared that he experienced the walk as though he was walking toward his death—a part of him that he needed to acknowledge and let go in order to move forward in his work. He was ready for his fears to die and found himself crying as he walked to the pyramid. When he got to the pyramid, he realized he was ready to take the next step to fully work as a healer and instructor of Being Energy.

Energy_Life_Sciences_Institute_Teotihuacan-Tom (1)It was such a moving experience to honoring our male energies, the “doing, manifesting, outwardly” energy that is alive within us. We honored that within ourselves there and then.

From there, we walked in silence to the Pyramid of the Moon, a pyramid smaller in form, but just as significant in meaning. Some have called it Tenan, which in Nahuatl, means “mother or protective stone.” The Pyramid of the Moon covers a structure older than the Pyramid of the Sun. The structure existed prior to 200 AD. It has a large plaza with several small buildings forming a cross. Inside, we acknowledged the mother inside each of us, the female inward nurturing energies. We meditated at the top of the pyramid facing south towards the Avenue of the Dead where we meditated on acceptance,  and compassion for ourselves and the world.

We walked back to the hotel to further integrate the journey of experiencing the process at the Sun and Moon Pyramids, integrating both inward and outward the complimentary forces of masculine light and feminine darkness within us. We reflected on this during the whole Saturday afternoon. In between sessions, we rested by the hotel pool, enjoying their delicious Mexican cuisine.

On Sunday, we celebrated the union of our light and dark forces by meditating at the temple of Quetzcoatl, which represented a union of the darkness and light in the form of a serpent that develops wings so that it can fly.

We danced and moved in the light and dark as we incorporated all we learned from our journey to the Sun and Moon Pyramids, acknowledging both forces of energy through movement.

We closed the event on Sunday afternoon with some soul-gazing, gazing into each other’s eyes for Quetzalcoatl, for the nagual and we found it! It was a beautiful and moving way to complete the Journey in Teotihuacan and continue our journeys back at home filled with a sense of awe, gratitude and love.

Standing Up Courageously in the Face of Fear!

How do we stand up for ourselves and others when we are cowering in fear?

Two days ago, we started a new cycle of our series of Path With Heart classes called “Overcoming Fear,” and we already started experiencing a warm wave of courage and love running through our bodies!

Nelson Mandela said, May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears,” and that is what we are actively and daily practicing at Being Energy.

May your intention for 2017 be based on your hopes and dreams. If you already wrote your intentions for this year, hold them high up and take steps towards their fulfillment. If you didn’t write your intention yet, then READ BELOW before writing them down:

Fear is the underlying force for procrastination and postponing dreams, not finishing projects, and having meaningful relationships. Our inner fears are being fed by the outside world.

In the world today we are getting more and more negative news—the political representation of our country now seems to want to imbue us with fear, keep us paralyzed  and feeling powerless. So, what to do?

This is what we did in class last Sunday:

1-We turned on the light on fear

energy_life_sciences_path_heart_xxii-pptx

2-We reminded ourselves of our Warriorship Training

energy_life_sciences_path_heart_xxii-pptx-1

3-We identified top common fears to us all

energy_life_sciences_path_heart_xxii-pptx-2

4- We differentiated between inspiring and paralyzing fears

energy_life_sciences_path_heart_xxii-pptx-3

5- And we courageously stood up, breathed deeply and took an action towards overcoming fear!

We encourage you to do the same!

We are standing up with all, embracing all feelings and facing the oncoming time!

Welcome 2017! What to Do on New Year’s Eve

“For a warrior, the world is weird because it is stupendous, awesome, mysterious, unfathomable. A warrior must assume responsibility for being here, in this marvelous world, in this marvelous time.” ~ Carlos Castaneda

This is a marvelous time. You have the opportunity to act from intent and create your dreams.

The following ritual is one that Castaneda gave to us many years ago, and it is something that we do at the end of each year without fail. We share it with you now to help you unfold a magical year ahead. It is a ceremony that starts during the last days of December, and finishes when the clock strikes midnight on January 1st. Why not give it a try and see what happens?

We hope that the benefits ripple out through your life, your relationships, your community and the world.

The steps are these:

  1. Clear out the old before the New Year.  On December 29 and 30, and even throughout the day on December 31, clear up some space in your home. Remove clutter, donate clothing that you aren’t using anymore, clean out and organize cabinets and drawers, and vacuum your floors; clean your windows and water your plants—all with a feeling of openness and readiness. The aim is to clean your home physically and energetically. There are four essential ways to do this:
    • Throw things away that are not needed or that are not bringing you joy
    • Give things away, letting those things bring something to someone while freeing you of any associated history with the objects
    • Dust off, wipe and wash your home, or at least a selected part of it, such as your bedroom or desk area
    • Rearrange things; change the placement of furniture, artwork and/or other objects to revitalize the energy flow of your space(s)
  2. On December 31, before midnight, attend to your desk or writing space. Organize bills and papers, and clear space so that you can comfortably sit to write a list of dreams and projects for the New Year.
  3. Next, take a pen or pencil and piece of paper, and get ready to make a list.
    • Mentally review what dreams and projects you were able to accomplish in 2016. What things stood out? What new relationships have you established? What came to a close? What new things have you learned, or insights have you gained with respect to your:
      1. Health
      2. Emotions
      3. Thoughts
      4. Family and community
      5. Larger global community of planet Earth
    • Now list all of these on a piece of paper labeled 2016. The idea is to review and distill what 2016 brought to you, and write it down so that you can be consciously aware of these experiences going into the New Year. Notice as you write if new insights or ideas come to you.
  4. Take a second piece of paper to start a new list. Name the list 2017, and write down what you want to accomplish or see unfold in this New Year. It might help to think of the categories of:
    • Personal development: What new things do I want to learn, what do I want to accept about myself, what do I want to heal in myself?
    • Family and friends: What relationships do I want to commit to, what relationships do I need to let go of, what relationships do I need to heal?
    • Work: Am I loving what I do? What can I change in 2017 to thrive?
    • Health: How do I plann to take better care of myself in 2017, what specific actions will I take to restore my energy?
    • My legacy and contribution to the larger world: What ONE action can I do to help others in need?
  5. Take a pause. You’ve cleared space, reviewed the year that’s passing and set forth dreams and goals for the year ahead. Now that you have your lists, take a little break to attend to any responsibilities or other commitments.
  6. At around 11:30 p.m., return to your writing space (it’s almost midnight!) Sit in silence for a moment and put your attention on the things on your 2017 list—those things that you want to see unfold in the New Year. You may even want to write an outline of what you would like to do, or draw a picture of yourself getting the job of your dreams, etc. Sit with it as long as you like, making sure you feel connected with it all, with your personal life path, and with the Universe by the time the clock strikes midnight.
  7. At midnight, on this first moment of the New Year, let the wave of your dreams wash over you.

Carlos Castaneda would tell us that, at midnight, the light of the Spirit or Universe comes and “watches us”—a force descends upon us, and this is a very powerful moment to be present and aware—to feel it and become acquainted with it.

Mountain-Sunrise-Wallpaper-DesktopAs we set our collective intentions, we hold best wishes for you all—for your joy and growth; for your freedom; for your daring, for your creation of new, inspiring projects; and for your kindness to all those around you. We celebrate together your becoming!

May our light and love radiate out to our friends, families, communities, and to the whole world.

Aerin and Miles

Buenos Aires – “Deep and light without being serious or superficial.”

“Aerin, can I be honest with you?” – a participant of our recent seminar approached me in a break a couple of hours after our workshop had started. “I have lots of judgments right now. I am judging everyone here and I am also judging the workshop. I am sorry, I just want to be honest with you.”

I took a deep breath and smiled. I looked at her eyes—I liked her immediately. I wanted to tell her that we all judged all the time and that she was going to feel better after practicing the recapitulation exercise that we were about to do, but I stopped myself. I was avoiding the issue. Instead, with curiosity I said “tell me about it. What is the content of your judgments?”

“I think what we are doing is superficial and that it lacks depth. And I also think that what people are sharing is also superficial,” she said.

I looked at her bright large honey eyes. I thought she was smart and beautiful. There are so many beautiful people in Argentina. Buenos Aires has the largest amount of psychotherapists per capita in the world, and the same goes for theaters and cafes. There is an emphasis in philosophy and in the arts that exhudes from the streets. I love walking and meeting people everywhere. She reminded me of the best of Argentina.

The themes presented at the workshop were about how we handle money, sex, and old age. We were exploring cultural and family beliefs passed on through generations that hinder our ability to handle money with impeccability. Some of the participants shared their struggles with money and their ability to give and receive in vulnerability and openness. Mostly, for us women, how to produce our own money has been a struggle for hundreds of years.

“You may consider that the superficiality that you judge in others, you may also judge in yourself. What other judgments do you have about you, that are not allowing you to be fully present and engaged today?” I asked her in a loving voice.

She paused and looked at my eyes. “I don’t know. I cannot stop it,” she replied. “I don’t know if I want to come back tomorrow.” She added.

“It is ok, whatever you decide to do is ok” I told her. “The important point here is your relationship with yourself, not what I do or what others do. How are you taking care of yourself as you become aware of these ingrained patterns that are emerging. How are you loving yourself?”

The next day she came back. Phew!, I was glad—and she opened up, like a flower. She shared with the group she was mistakenly seeing as light and superficial. She said that she learned we can be deep and handle deep issues with lightness. Her smile illuminated the room. I thanked her for her honesty in the first place, and for sharing her learning process.

This is exactly what happens at our workshops—participants learn what they need to learn, they figure out in their own time, with their own uniqueness. We support individuals to find out their own resources and abilities, and we love each one of them as they do their process.

The workshop in Buenos Aires was powerful beyond measure. Participants came from Buenos Aires, from many other provinces and even from Chile and Mexico.

We identified, acknowledged and released judgments and fears about money, sex and old age. We sat down in silence. We held hands and prayed together. We did lots of energy passes. We sang, and we danced together.

Miles and I are moved and grateful for such unique experience. The commitment of participants to work their issues and free themselves from misinterpretations and the depth of their sharing touched our hearts deeply.

Below, please find some of their feedback after the workshop.

We look forward to seeing you in Teotihuacan in March 10-12, 2017.

May you have a peaceful and heartfelt Holiday Season, surrounded by your loved ones,

Aerin Alexander

“Thank you very much for your presence and for what you provided us in this Workshop. I loved the movements of the morning and the recapitulation in the afternoon, was very productive, we made a good team the 3 of us we participated and we drew very powerful conclusions. Also the movements to strengthen the pelvic floor and the awareness about our energetic nature, was a much appreciated info.

Love and thanks,”

Maria del Carmen

“The seminar is just settling in me and it is difficult to explain in words because the real pearls are physical understandings, the physical sensation of what a belief is and how simple it is to disarm it and the great gift was the after: Innocence that Leave it alone, wow.

I emphasize the love, the love that you transmit, the care, the elixir of Miles and the oil of Aerin whenever I use them I imagine them preparing them. All beautifully and all carefully handled.

I learned to stop sitting on my lower back and sacrum and instead to sit on my sit bones! What a difference! I loved the tennis ball to open the fascia at the sole of the feet and the gentle jumps on the heels to lift up the energy!  And the wonderful pelvic exercises and dancing passes.

Hugs from Guanajuato”

Margarita

“The Gathering Energy series, gained depth when you explained details I had never noticed online. Miles and Aerín executed it with their own variations and it was very rich and interesting. The stretching exercises with my legs rejuvenate me!

The stalking exercises done in three parts were plunging us into our memories and thoughts. Talking to our beliefs was shocking to me and my fellow students.” Pablo.

“I stayed with so much freshness in the body that I set out to practice every day, and I just have a partner at work who also practices. We are getting together every day to make passes … even if it’s 20minutes !

Thank you,”

Mother Mountain, Father Sun – Our Retreat in Schweibenalp

Dear friends,

Miles and I just came back from teaching a six-day retreat in Switzerland, and it was not until I arrived to the Los Angeles airport that I realized how quiet my mind had been. At the customs line, there were a couple of ladies behind us wearing a turban in their heads, and they were asked several times for their passports. Two men were removed from the immigration line, just because their skin was darker and looked “suspicious”. Interesting enough, police didn’t question the white ones like me.

I crunched and held my breath confirming once again the racial discrimination in the US. And this thought felt like a sharp knife cutting through a field of yellow flowers and a rain of blessings that I had groomed while teaching in Switzerland. Before my arrival, my mind was quiet, entertained by the poignancy of the present moment, admiring nature and catching up with trains, taxis and planes.

Experiencing inner calm and peace for a week became so “normal” that only after being removed from that state brought me the self-awareness of it. Isn’t that funny? I guess I needed darkness to see the light that I already had inside. It made me think of when my teacher said that one only becomes cognizant of having been in inner silence after the silence is over. There is no self-reflection in inner silence—we are simply IN the state.

Our retreat took place in the dreamlike mountains of the beautiful city of Brienz, on the Bernese Overland region of Switzerland. The village, on hour and half from Zurich airport, is surrounded by turquoise large lakes and the Brienzer Rothorn mountains.

Maurice, who had been dreaming this event with us the entire year, drove us from Zurich to Brienz and we couldn’t stop gazing at nature with our noses glued to the windows. The quality of the sunlight shining through the orange and reddish autumn leaves took our breath away. We saw a few boats as if pained in the background of turquoise and deep blue lakes. The outstanding beauty of the snow painting the peaks and the freshest wet and clean air made us feel as if in a dream.  Then, we arrived to another dream, that of Schweibenalp.

The Schweibenalp Center for Unity was founded in 1982 by Sundar Robert Dreyfus, Fredy Aly and Silvia Bollag, upon guidance from the Indian teacher Sri Haidakhan Baba. It is a place where traditional religions and cultures meet a new religion of the heart; founded as a place for multicultural community on the way to the realization of Truth, Simplicity, Love and the experience of Unity.

The center has a powerful venue built is an octagon, with large windows where we could watch deer coming while practicing energy passes. The wood floors and the natural sunlight accompanied us throughout the week in our quest to find our real selves.

We walked to the forest mountain stream in the early morning, among the fresh foggy air, and ate delicious meals between our sessions. Truly, organic, vegetarian and CLEAN! Swiss perfect and clean kitchen that made me feel at home.

I was moved by the sincere and honest welcome of Sundar, Schweibenalp’s founder and his staff. They walk their talk and practice daily the returning to the heart!. Sundar took us on a walk around the property and shared about a very auspicious finding just before our arrival. In their property they found three trees of different species living together, joined into a common base tree trunk. They saw it as an omen and a symbolic expression of their vision.

Highlights from the six-day retreat:

  • Sundar also invited us at 7:00 am on a rainy day to a full Fire Ceremony, to thank mother earth and to ask for the removal of obstacles in our dreaming
  • An amazing 3-hour hike in the mountains towards a green alpine lake, hiding between granite peaks and high forest terrain

And, the long recapitulation-witnessing exercises that gave us the time and depth to liberate our hearts and brought clarity and sobriety to our minds

Ah, wait, something important. For our entire days we explored, experienced and worked with the “four natural enemies” of man described by Carlos Castaneda: fear, clarity, power and old age! Below find some feedback form the participants. And if you want to know more about the four enemies, take our new path with Heart class Series starting on January 8th, 2017.

It was so good that we are coming back to Schweibenalp on October 26-29, 2017!

With gratitude and love,

Aerin Alexander

Here is what the retreat participants said:

“Everything about the Schweibenalp retreat was a joy–the energy movements, especially with music, the mountain setting, the delicious food and the energy of the place, a place dedicated to mindfulness and the unity of all seekers.  However, for me personally the very best part was the deep exploration into places where each of us has vital energy stuck in the memory of an event.  I cannot describe how powerful it was when my group of three, each willing to be honest and open, really listened to each other, without judgment or criticism, just being present and reinforcing the wisdom that each of us already carries within.  Thanks so much to Miles, Aerin and all the participants!” – Tom Reavley, USA.

“What a pleasure it was to see you guys, to spend such an amazing week together and to get to know Axel! I so enjoyed it all even though it was also a very deep and intense experience to go through the recapitulation sessions. I will be processing it for a while! Heartfelt thanks for your energy and excellence” – Ena Xena, England.

“Now that few days has passed, I can examine with more clarity what happened during our “energy boot camp” in Scheweibenalp retreat.

1) Schweibenalp is truly a place of power. I never felt such a harmonious, nourishing and gentle energy and if you’re looking for a boost for your transformation process, it’s the place for you. Seems like it’s almost impossible to act like an asshole there. Almost. 🙂 And the food was truly great and so was hiking in the Alps and that lake…my god…never seen such a beauty.

2) We did some serious energy work during those six days. We examined and recapitulated four enemies of man: fear, clarity, power and old age and did some other interesting stuff. All those exercises were truly powerful. At the end of day, you were just exhausted, but it was a good exhaustion, because you felt you did something very, very important to yourself.

3) But most of all, it was a BE family meeting. It was truly a pleasure to see you in flesh, chat with you, crack jokes with you, listen to your stories, have a lunch with you. I’m deeply grateful for that and I will keep it in my heart. We are a band of brothers and sisters because we share the same trenches, the same battles. The seed of freedom is firmly planted into ourselves and there’s no escape, so we move on, following Intent with open hearts. Thank you all who were there in flesh and in Spirit” .- Sami Penaman, Finland.

“Dear Aerin and Miles, you really hooked me with your program. I enjoyed these six days with you very much and I already set the intend to be there next year again. Thank you for the wonderful pictures.

I’ve done many retreats and workshops of various kinds and most of the times I couldn’t get the experience back in daily life. But I’m really confident that this time it will work. If it’s interesting for you, I will write some more in a couple of weeks. Really daily life will begin tomorrow for me again. I’ve also decided to join your upcoming Path with Heart Class in December. So, I’m looking forward to see you there again. Love” – Andreas, Germany.

“The six-days retreat in Schweibenalp was extremely interesting and very well organized, sharing body movements and witnessing exercises allowing us to, as you say, update old beliefs and misinterpretations…The group was extremely open minded and respectful and it was a great pleasure for me to have participated in this workshop. I thank Miles for his very attentive and kind listening during private consultation. In fact his suggestions how to see our lives in a positive manner were very much appreciated.

I would not forget to congratulate Maurice for the tremendous work he has done in order to make every thing perfect. His kind “omnipresence” was very much appreciated by all the group. And I will either not forget you Aerin for what you have done, showing perfectly exercises, giving explanations and being attentive to each of us. With my warm and kindest regards.” – Zina, Switzerland.

3 Reasons to Get More Sleep

So how’s that sleep thing going for you? Do you feel rested?

You’ve probably heard this, but sleep really, truly is important. Getting enough sleep is vital for optimal health and wellbeing. Yet most of us don’t manage to sleep enough, or sleep well. This can be complicated by hormonal shifts, especially for women.

For everyone, though, sleep deprivation can lead to trouble both instantaneously and over time. From accidents to chronic health problems, sleep deficiency can be dangerous. Let’s look at why good sleep is so important. Sleep affects:

  • Brain function
  • Physical health
  • Performance and Safety

Brain Function

Research reveals that the brain actually shrinks when you don’t get enough sleep. With less sleep, cognitive function declines and ventricle enlargement grows (a marker for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease).

Recent work by Oxford neuroscientist Russell Foster even links abnormal circadian rhythms to mental illness, including schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder.

Additional studies show that lack of sleep has a direct impact on memory, focus and the ability to make decisions and control your emotions. It has also been linked to depression and mood swings.

On the upside, studies also clearly indicate that proper sleep improves learning and problem-solving abilities. In fact, when you sleep well, your brain actually forms new learning and memory pathways.

Physical Health

When it comes to disease prevention, good sleep is key. Studies show that getting six to eight hours of sleep per night lowers your risk of developing:

  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney disease
  • Hypertension
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke

In fact, it’s estimated that 30 – 40 percent of all medical problems that a general practitioner sees are, directly or indirectly, related to lack of sleep.

Sleep affects healthy growth and development, immunity, hormones (including stress hormones), the body’s reaction to insulin and more.

It might surprise you to learn that getting good sleep is essential for weight control. It’s been shown that sleep directly influences the level of hormones that make you feel full (leptin) or hungry (ghrelin). When you don’t get enough sleep, your levels of ghrelin go up and leptin down, resulting in you feeling hungrier and more likely to overeat.

Performance and Safety

Lack of sleep not only affects us individually, but it also affects those around us—our families, coworkers and even our communities. Insufficient sleep can lead to everything from lack of concentration, moodiness and reduced physical performance to a public safety hazard.

A study led by Dr. Charles Czeisler of Harvard Medical School’s Division of Sleep, for example, found that hospital medical errors could be reduced by as much as 36 percent when limiting doctor’s work shifts to 16 hours and reducing their total work schedule to a maximum of 80 hours per week.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conservatively estimates that driver fatigue is responsible for 100,000 reported crashes each year (other data suggests that it the numbers are closer to 1 million crashes and 8,000 deaths per year). Sleep deprivation was also identified as a significant factor in the 1979 Three Mile Island nuclear accident, and the 1986 nuclear disaster at Chernobyl.

Getting More Sleep

It’s clear that sleep deprivation is a serious matter. So what can we do to improve our quality and quantity of sleep? You can purchase our on-demand video Sleep, Body Repair and Dreaming to learn more.

Also, you can download Aerin’s guided mini-moves to practice on bed and fall sleep easily and wake up refresh.

For now, how much sleep is enough sleep? Studies show that for most adults, six to eight hours per night is optimal.

Wishing you good sleep,
Dr. Reid

A Key to Change Your Body + Your Life!

As the summer wanes, so does the outward flow of energy that summer naturally brings. The exuberant activity recedes, and what lies underneath comes to the surface. The same seems to happen with our body chemistry.

This is the time of year when people frequently come to me for help with hormonal balance. From the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) point of view, the endocrine system offers a beautiful expression of yin-yang balance. Hormones act powerfully in incredibly small amounts, the alphabet of a complex system of bidirectional communication between all areas of the human body, a biochemical mind. Activity and rest, also at the level of the mind, influence this balance. So, as we move toward the fall season, let’s look at the question:

Do I need to balance my hormones?

Thyroid hormones, Vitamin D, estrogen/progesterone, testosterone/DHEA and cortisol are our basic “hormone awareness pack.” We should know what our levels are with each of these. An imbalance of a member of this group might show up in any of the functions they help regulate. So let’s dive deeper into the above question. Do any of these aspects hit home for you?

  • Am I feeling extra tired?
  • Is low libido an issue for me?
  • Do I get too many infections?
  • Is my PMS an issue for me?
  • Are hot flashes an issue for me?
  • Do I have trouble turning off at night and getting restful sleep?
  • Am I bloated all the time?

If any of these issues ring a bell, you might want to take a look at your hormones.

What can I do to balance my hormones?

Rule #1  Remove or reduce obstructions

A fine biochemical orchestration needs a clear, clean environment, free of impediments. In our world today, a jungle of toxins bombards us from everywhere, from invisible radiation from electronic devices to chemicals in cosmetics and home cleaning supplies and preservatives and artificial additives in our food and drink. ALL of this complexity comes into the body through the lungs, the intestinal mucosa or through skin absorption. From there, it travels to the lymph, the blood and then everywhere else. It is accurate to say that we live within a sea of toxins, either moving through our body, stuck to a physical structure in our body or attached microscopically to an active enzyme or chemical process in our system and potentially interfering with it.

There are many types of detoxification and hormone balancing programs available today. We support our students and patients in participating in any well-balanced and well-researched protocol. In fact, a proper detoxification program is a key in balancing hormones in today’s world.

At the Energy Life Sciences Institute clinic, and in our Being Energy programs, we offer the Being Energy Detox Program along with personalized nutritional supplement recommendations. Our patients and clients have experiences outstanding results with this program.

There are also some useful things you can do yourself at home:

  • Drink a teaspoon of organic apple cider vinegar upon waking, to stimulate the liver detoxification pathways
  • Drink extra water for five days at a time to enhance kidney clearance—four to six glasses per day, depending on the temperature and your activity
  • Shop smart—avoid packaged foods and choose organic as much as possible
  • If you are more daring, you can try a simple 36-hour fast; this can be a juice fast or a water fast—no solid food. Begin one morning on an empty stomach, without breakfast and fast for one day (with juice or water), then finish the fast the following morning with a light breakfast. Be sure to keep well hydrated during this time. This mini-fast gives your gut and liver a break so that they can release built up toxicity. Please note: we advise to do fasts under medical supervision only.
Rule #2  Always look beyond the body and mind to the level of spirit

Always regulate both from the outside (toxins, proper nutrients, supportive environment) and from the inside (behavioral patterns and spirit level). We are spiritual beings first and foremost, and we are having a physical experience secondly. Both levels of being are important to attend to, and they complement one another.

Our spiritual experience is rooted in our biochemistry. Indeed, we could also describe hormones as “messengers of spirit.” When we are having a spiritual experience, what my teacher Carlos Castaneda called a “non-ordinary” reality experience, it also changes our hormones. When our spirit is “off,” when we kind of “feel off,” our biochemistry, our hormonal balance, is also often off. When we are in inner silence, our homeostasis is enhanced, and the psycho-neuro-endocrine axis shifts to a more balanced regulation.

Exercise Fact

In states of meditation, purposeful mind states can trigger a change in any of the diverse glands in the body. The hypothalamus regulates the pituitary gland and the pituitary regulates the rest of the glands. The hypothalamus is the central connector of this fantastic neuroplasticity mechanism. You can exercise your focal attention (associated with the prefrontal cortex) by specifically holding in your attention an emotional experience—being the observer changes the pathways through the hypothalamus and, consequently, the secretion of hormones throughout the body changes.

Research has shown that the number of pathways between the prefrontal and the amygdala determines how fast we bounce back from adversity. Our thinking self can calm down our feeling self, so we can act with purpose and decision instead of being ruled by negative emotions. This resilience, how fast we rebound, can be of great support for the hormone universe inside of us. Our inner mind can influence what happens with those “messengers of spirit.”

In summary, you can help balance your hormones from within using YOUR MIND. It is like becoming your own best friend!

Try this practice:

Give yourself a few minutes without interruption. Sit or lie down comfortably. Now visualize, or have a feeling of, the areas I describe here in any way you wish—there is no need to know the actual anatomy.

  1. Bring your inner eyes and mind to the base of your spine, the sacrum…Imagine how your spinal cord is collecting and bringing information from your entire body up along the spine to your brain.
  1. Now bring your mind to your forehead area. Deep inside is your middle prefrontal cortex. Imagine lines connecting your cortex to your limbic system, at the center of your brain. You can self-regulate your inner emotional world. You can send energy and information from your central prefrontal cortex to the hypothalamus.
  1. Observe any negative thoughts, worries, etc. as if watching a movie play in front of your eyes. This is just the act of deliberate observation. Engage your purpose to resist getting drawn into the picture. Look at it as an interesting mental process. See how easy your mind can do this.
  1. Deliberately impose positive, enhancing images and thoughts. This new input will strengthen the pathway between the prefrontal cortex and the amygdala.
  1. Hold your attention on these new lines of information for a few moments or even minutes.

Young, Vital and on the Move: The Vascular System

It would not be an exaggeration to say that young vessels equate to young age and that a healthy, vital flow in the blood vessels makes every other part of your body shine and function well. Open yourself up to discovering the universal flow and connections that are inherent in your arteries, veins and lymph glands.

Our Vascular System is one of the most amazing elements of our body. As a teacher’s assistant during medical school, I was able to see firsthand the incredible complexity of our network of vessels, the arteries, veins and lymphatics. A few years ago, the German medical artist Gunther von Hagens toured Europe and the United States with an exhibition called “Body Worlds,” where, through a medical education process called plastination that turned the liquid within vessels into an acrylic compound, he was able to show whole segments of just vessels, with no other structures. Smaller and smaller tubes that ultimately became thin as hairs, spreading in shapes that made out the exact body of each organ—a sight to behold! A true community where every single corner is linked to the 3 main attributes of the system:

  1.  Each cell receives oxygen and nutrients through an artery
  2. Each cell delivers CO2 and toxins through a vein
  3. Each space between cells drains leftover excretions and debris through a lymph vessel

In Eastern thought and martial arts practice, the term vessels was the original description to what later was translated in the West as meridians, or channels. It was the observation of circulation by the ancient physicians and healers which gave them an understanding of how to move information and resources—energy, throughout the human body.

In shamanistic principles, as I learnt them from my teacher, Carlos Castaneda, the body can revitalize by means of a process that he called energy reallocation. The circulation in this case occurs through a network of vessels carrying a vital force called tendon energy. During the practice of physical movements, which in Being Energy we call Energy Passes, we deliver jolts or strikes to a certain count, stimulating the flow of tendon energy along vessels from the feet to the head.

Learning how to feel our vascular system, and how to activate each of its three parts, can bring lots of benefits and it can also be fun to do. Join our last class of the year this coming Saturday, November 12 to learn more!

The Spiral of My Life – Pablo Baynon on the Path with Heart

The spiral of my life began in a full-blown social uprising. I was in my mother’s womb when the police detained her with others in a protest. My mother also used to sing before I was born; my maternal grandfather played the piano while my grandmother made world maps and took care of a store. My father was a laborer at that time, like my paternal grandfather who was a lathe operator; my grandmother was the daughter of Patagonia farmers. At an early age, I experienced the last military dictatorship in Argentina. My parents tried to keep us away from the horror that they were living, but I remember the fear they expressed with their eyes and my own fear of everyone who seemed menacing.

Fortunately I lived in a neighborhood where a lot of children played. We also drew, sang and performed plays with my siblings and cousins. All of the foregoing shaped my passion and purpose in this world. Another element came in also that passed unnoticed for many years. In the summer school that I attended with other children, one hot afternoon they took us for a walk to a small wooden bridge over a stream. The teachers were chatting among themselves a few yards away when the comments of the little ones caught my attention. I looked toward where they were pointing and saw something that I still cannot distinguish from a dream; in the muddy ravine of the stream, carved in the black earth, was a large face with thick lips, wide nose and two brilliant carmine red stones in the sockets of both eyes. I contemplated the image in silence and heard someone saying to the children that the face was made by the “Indians,” that if a rock were thrown at it, this would bring rain.

I was developing my interest in drawing, sports, making songs and also participation in politics. When I was invited to play in a rock band, I felt that at last I had a place in the world. However, something wasn’t working. Some years later my music friends had children or their work required all their time. It was then that a friend loaned me A Separate Reality by Carlos Castaneda. When I finished the book, I went out to the street like always, but for the first time, I walked in compete silence. And it was while taking such a walk some time afterward that I made the decision to follow the “path with heart.” I understood what it was that wasn’t working for me in relation to music. What I was really looking for was a way to feel safe and recognized. I wanted to be like the famous musicians. In order to follow the new path, I had to make an arrangement: From then on, music would be my traveling companion and I would sing for whoever wanted to listen.

la quemadaTo follow the path with heart, what would be better than to travel to Mexico! Moreover, I would see whether I could take care of myself alone. I corroborated in the land of Mexico the immense heritage of ancient wisdom, still expressed in their infinite culture. However, little by little I lost my impetus to make the trip, and found myself exhausted by daily life and a heartbreak. Walking one afternoon, the idea came to me that I should meet new people. That night I encountered a practitioner of the energy passes, who took me to a practice the next day. There I met my wife.

The energy passes gave me an enormous push and my beloved proposed that we go to Michoacan to live on a farm. But still… I was afraid. I decided to take a walk in the mountains in order to make a big decision. In the train station, a man who was walking beside me gave me a magazine. A sign! But no matter how much I read the copy, I couldn’t find anything that would resolve my doubts. Actually, I didn’t really know what I wanted to make of my life. For several years of ups and downs, I lived this purpose with my companion, but I still had the sensation of doubt. I could have saved myself a lot of unpleasantness and enjoyed that period better if I had paid more attention to the magazine that the mysterious man gave me. I had kept it and looked through it years after: On the inside cover there was an enormous photograph of the monarch butterflies, the symbol of Michoacan!

During a stalking exercise, when we were asked to find the stone that we still have in our heart, I closed my eyes and relived the terror of the time of the dictatorship in the country. But I also saw the image of my grandmothers with white handkerchiefs who, with the aid of institutions, achieved the goal that these people who terrorized me received their just reward. I decided to leave this fear behind.

My lineage, the face carved in the muddy ravine, the music, the energy passes, the love for my fellow man, my beloved… everything strung together in the spiral of this life.
